Illustrator Chuootillus and the Journey of Bringing Let Us Out! to Life
Updated: Jul 2
Behind the charming little characters and the bright, gentle pages of Let Us Out! lies an emotional creative journey by illustrator Chuootillus. Join us as we hear heartfelt reflections from the artist who has been part of this story since its very first sketches.
A Title That Brought a Smile
"I still remember the moment I received the manuscript. The very first thing that made me smile was the title, Let Us Out! It sounded just like the cheerful voices of little children, eagerly waiting to dash outside and play."

From that first impression, the world of the story gradually came to life in the illustrator's imagination. It was then that Chuootillus began envisioning how the little characters would appear on each page.
"The story is short and innocent, yet full of delightful imagery. I could feel its sense of freedom, energy, and the authenticity of childhood. Right away, I imagined simple illustrations with plenty of breathing space, giving the little characters room to run, jump, and play."
When Even a Pair of Eyes Has to Tell the Story
Looking at the finished book, few readers would guess that the greatest challenge lay in the smallest details. In Let Us Out!, there are very few background scenes to help carry the narrative, making the characters' expressions more important than ever. To capture that natural feeling, Chuootillus revisited countless tiny details before finally feeling satisfied.
"The hardest part was keeping everything light and simple while still full of emotion. Since there aren't many backgrounds, every glance and every movement had to speak for the story itself. I went back and forth many times to find a rhythm that felt natural while preserving the innocence of childhood. There were days when I spent hours adjusting nothing but a single pair of eyes, until they could truly 'tell a story'."
The Moment the Little Characters Finally Stepped Into the Real World
After a long journey of working through manuscripts and sketches, the day the finished book arrived brought a particularly meaningful feeling. The little characters that had once existed only in rough drawings were finally ready to meet young readers in their completed form. For Chuootillus, it was a moment that beautifully captured the purpose of being an illustrator.
"When I finally held the finished book in my hands, I was incredibly happy. It was such a special feeling. The little characters I had drawn could finally 'come out' into the real world, into the hands of children everywhere. Moments like that remind me just how meaningful illustration can be."
As the conversation came to an end, Chuootillus spoke about Let Us Out! with gratitude and affection.
"I'm truly thankful for the opportunity to be part of this story—a little book filled with bright, genuine laughter."
Perhaps that is exactly what Chuootillus hopes to share with every child through each and every page of the book.
